The LIFE CLIMAWIN project consists of 4 phases to demonstrate the use of biochar (biochar of vegetable origin) to achieve a neutral balance between CO2 and N2O. In addition, it is planned to rethink winery processes to reduce CO2 emissions, reuse wastes to reduce ozone depleting substances and increase renewable energies to avoid burning fossil fuels. LIFE CLIMAWIN will be no longer a project when we can replicate and share these practices so that more European wineries and individuals can avoid the consequences of climate change in the wine industry.
SUSTAINABLE VINEYARD PRACTICES
IMPLEMENTATION OF SUSTAINABLE COOLING SYSTEMS IN WINERIES
IMPLEMENTATION OF A SUSTAINABLE ENERGY MANAGEMENT IN WINERIES AND VINEYARDS
SUSTAINABILITY AND APPLICATION OF PROJECT RESULTS
DEMOSTRATING the potential for mitigating land use change by shifting from cereal-based farming systems to more sustainable methods such as organic vineyards and practising sustainable forms of soil care, such as regenerative agriculture.
TO INCREASE the amount of organic carbon in the soil in the long term, using the soil as a storage for carbon.
REDUCE non-CO2 emissions from manure management (such as CH4) and soil (such as N2O), as well as CO2 emissions from burning pruning residues.
RECYCLE manure and other organic waste from farms for use as soil improvers, e.g. biochar.
IMPROVE the composting process and increase carbon sequestration in the soil, returning the biochar created to the soil, to close the cycle of carbon and other nutrients.
TO PRESENT innovative and sustainable solutions to cover cooling needs in wineries (such as cooling grapes, tanks during fermentation, barrel storage area and winery facilities) while using available resources in a more environmentally friendly way.
REDUCING HFCs by capturing CO2 from alcoholic fermentation and using it for internal uses at reasonable costs
IMPROVE the performance of the heat pump by using the groundwater used for irrigation in the cooling process.
VALIDATE the solutions implemented in the prototypes by testing them under normal working conditions on the wine sector.
ANALYSE the results of the proposed solutions, from a technical, economic and environmental point of view.
TO REDUCE significantly the emissions generated by the wine company's activities through smart energy management.
INSTALL a small electricity distribution network (microgrid) that integrates all energy sources and uses on the estate, including vineyards and winery.
DESIGN, IMPLEMENT AND VALIDATE a control system that allows for efficient management of the energy required by this microgrid
VALIDATE the solutions proposed in the prototypes and obtain end-user feedback and approvals to start replicating the prototypes
ANALYSE the results from technical, economic and environmental perspectives to assess their impact and feasibility.
ESTABLISH measures to replicate results or expand them, seeking investments to ensure the sustainability of the project once it is completed and, at the same time, to initiate the "After-LIFE Plan", which will continue to motivate other wineries to adopt measures to combat climate change.
CONSOLIDATE and prolong the positive effects of the project over time through the development of the "After-LIFE" Plan.
TO IDENTIFY the factors that could drive the adoption of climate change measures by companies in the wine industry.
TO UNDERSTAND, MEASURE AND QUANTIFY socioeconomic benefits for dissemination and replication.
EXCHANGE data and experiences with other projects to identify synergies and collaborations.
CONVERT prototypes into products through business plans
