For yet another year, Intergia has participated in the World Congress of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) this time celebrating the International Year of Vine and Wine on the 100th anniversary of the Organisation. The event was held from 14 to 18 October at its new headquarters in Dijon, in the heart of French Burgundy. The Congress brought together the world’s leading specialists in the fields of viticulture and oenology, as well as experts in health, safety, law and economics related to wine production. Over the course of a week, presentations were made, scientific posters were presented, co-sided events were held, such as tastings, presentations of different wines and markets, vineyards and wineries were visited and, in short, the future of the wine industry was discussed in the face of current challenges.
In this context, Javier Carroquino (founding partner and director of Tecnología y Estrategia) and Cristina Escriche (engineer and R&D&I project manager) attended the Congress on behalf of Intergia, representing the European project LIFE CLIMAWIN – Climate change mitigation in the wine sector: sustainable practices in vineyards and wineries.
LIFE CLIMAWIN: the wine sector as a model of sustainability
In the face of the controversy over whether wine activity is ‘good’ in terms of its impact on the environment and contribution to climate change, the need arises to claim that the wine sector is precisely one of those with the greatest potential to combat climate change.
In this context, on Wednesday 16 October, Cristina Escriche presented the paper ‘Wine production as a source of positive impacts on the semi-natural environment’, which spoke about the European project LIFE CLIMAWIN. This project aims to show innovative techniques to convert the vineyard and winery into a model of sustainability.
For this purpose, a very significant case study located in the Ribera del Duero wine region (Spain) was chosen as a demonstration. In the framework of this winery surrounded by its vineyards, different technical actions are implemented that have to do with the impact of changes in land use, sustainable soil management, efficient cooling techniques and energy management in off-grid systems, as well as the analysis of the socio-economic and environmental impacts of these solutions.
The main objective of the project is to demonstrate that winemaking has a positive impact on the environment and the economy on the environment and the economy.
For its implementation, LIFE CLIMAWIN has a consortium led by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), which will work for 42 months together with the University of Zaragoza, the company Intergia Energía Sostenible SL, the Bodega Bosque de Matasnos and the Plataforma Tecnológica del Vino.
This initiative, 101113948 – LIFE22-CCM-ES-CLIMAWIN, which runs from July 2023 to December 2026, has a budget of 994,195.02€ and has received funding of 596,516.82€ from the European Union’s LIFE Programme.
